Name the goal clearly
Be specific about what the money is for: school fees, rent, business capital, a trip or an emergency fund. A named goal is easier to protect when other spending tempts you.
Choose the amount and the date
Decide how much you need in total and when you need it. Subtract anything you have already saved. What remains is the amount you still have to build.
Divide it into weekly targets
Divide the remaining amount by the number of weeks until your deadline. For example, if you need 600 000 FCFA for rent in six months, that is about 26 weeks, so you would set aside roughly 23 100 FCFA each week.
If that figure is more than you can manage, you have two honest options: extend the deadline or reduce the target. Either is better than a plan you cannot keep.
Mark milestones and keep the money apart
Break the goal into checkpoints, such as a quarter, half and three quarters of the way. Each one is a chance to check that you are on track and to celebrate progress.
Keep savings separate from the money you spend day to day, so it is not used by accident.
